LAST WEEK WE BROUGHT YOU SOME VERY SPECIAL BOOK SELECTIONS FROM OUR PETS. THEY WERE SUCH A HIT, WE DECIDED TO BRING YOU SOME MORE!
The Chickens (Frida, Sadie and Josie) (Fiona is our serf)
We love sunrises, Gregorian chants and Scottish country dancing. We also take healthy eating and sustainable lifestyles very seriously, though we have no time for that Paleo business. All that protein? Blargg! Fiona is kept busy feeding us, watering and raking our yard and cleaning out our nesting boxes. When she is resting, we like her to read from Happy Hens: All You Need to Know to Keep Your Chooks Healthy and Content published by our friends at ABC Books.
We LOVE the ABC (Josie is a little obsessed with Radio National, to be honest). We pride ourselves on being highly ethical here at Chez Chook (except when we get caught jumping into our neighbour Gladys’s backyard for a rummage), so our other recommendation is Fair Food: Inspiring Stories of Ethical Living ed by Nick Rose. Well anyway, that’s a couple of books to get eggcited about…
LUCKY (Helen belongs to me)
I grew up in the house next door but now I live here on my giant ladybug cushion. My twin sister, who incidentally is also my second niece, is also called Lucky. Yes I’m from a complicated lineage, but it’s nice to know that even when you can’t have kittens, you always have family. Speaking of other things I can’t do, I’m not allowed to go outside (but believe me, I try!). Instead, I sit on my giant ladybug cushion and dream. During my waking hours I like to read a new genre I like to call ‘Indoor Cat Fantasy’.
I’m currently reading The Little Vegie Patch Co: DIY Garden Projects. Edible Gardening and Backyard Fun – two of my favourite things! It’s full of great ideas for the garden that almost anyone with a hammer and few power tools can easily do. The section on vertical gardening is my favourite as this suits even the smallest of spaces. As previously, Mat Pember and Dillon Seitchik-Reardon have added humour to gardening and filled the book with instructional photographs. Now there’s a couple of laps I’d really like to sit on!
SPIKE (MARY-ROSE BELONGS TO ME)
My mum has a new book out, and I haven’t been this excited since the last time I got a belly rub! In fact, Swimming Home is being launched it at Avid Reader tonight! I have been assured there will be plenty of tepid water and old bones available prior to the launch, so get there early! You can book in to this free event easily with this link, or simply call 3846 3422!!! Some people say I use too many exclamation marks but I think they’re wrong!!!!!!!!
CHARLI (JODIE BELONGS TO ME)
I’ve been with Jodie and her family for five years. I’m a working dog (a Kelpie, Border Collie cross), so I’m active and smart. This is how I look when I’m letting Jodie know she hasn’t taken me out to run and chase the ball.
I’m a rescue dog, and I’ve been a foster sister to some other dogs who’ve stayed with us on their way to their new homes. That’s why I loved Life After Life by Kate Atkinson, because it’s about the different lives a person (or dog) could lead depending on what choices they make or the people they meet. Plus dogs are important characters in the story, as they should be.
The Beehive (Fiona is our Queen!!)
As you would know bees are avid readers! We have a very active book club culture here in the Hive. Many of us our members of the Busy Bees Bookclub so we were delighted when Fiona told us she is starting a new Sunday Big Breakfast Bookclub! Thank heavens it’s in the morning as we don’t do nights. We’ll be buzzing along to the first one this Sunday with Susan Johnson and we have already booked ourselves in to the next ones with Kári Gíslason and Mary-Rose MacColl.
Thank goodness we have Fiona in our life. We love her. In fact we are besotted especially as she ensures the garden is always planted with wonderful flowers. Sorry … what do mean they are all just weeds?
